It is customary for commentators to write summaries of the year past as it approaches its end and to speculate on what the new year may bring. I am not going to say much about 2012, a year best forgotten so far as I'm concerned, a year when the slide into economic, social and political chaos became unstoppable.
In 2012 the world turned a corner and the globalisation of poverty became the basic guiding principle of the corporate government that many national government's in truth represent, a few like North Korea and Syria presently don't, but with little cosmetic alterations the national governments of Nato countires for example are just the government. Beyond the superficial posturing and culturally specific window dressing their composition and rhetoric is always identical, not the world government they aspire to... but certainly a federation of puppet states that constitutes a world changing bloc, or in other words an empire.
Like all empires it is franchised, outsourced, privatized and clustered around forces of great violence and terror in order to transgress all the rules of agreed behaviour and lay claim to natural resources that in reality belong to no-one but the planet itself.
This gluttenous self centred acquisitiveness is the mood music of governments everywhere and since governments only ever represent the power of the already very rich and powerful, they are all playing more or less the same game, with our planet and our lives.
The governing elite here and abroad are characterised by this crass acquisitive self centredness, greedy, nasty, disreputable nexus of plotters and gamblers who hold the fate of our world in their hands as demonstrated by the food stuffs speculators whose lavish lifestyles are funded by the artificially induced starvation they conjure up and people are quite rightly getting sick of it.
Painful lessons have had to be learnt in the course of this awakening, it would not have been possible without them, but the fundamental scepticism regarding the legitimacy of state power is an emergent global phenomenon today as we enter 2013.
Having traversed the three stages of what sociologist Jurgen Habermas calls Legitimation Crisis our government has 1. surrendered policy coherence to corporate interests and supra-state global entities like the International Monetary Fund and World Bank; 2. lost institutional will as services are cut to the bone parts of the machinery of government stops functioning; and 3. the entire insitution of government has suffered massive loss of public confidence. These things have already happened in many parts of the world as the tentacles of corporate globalism cloaks the world in concocted poverty and non-existent debt ....the fight back against it is equally dispersed and yet also ubiquitous, you don't have to be on the barricades to participate in the uprising against austerity in this world of white collar crime and the earth's stolen riches.
But what you think and what you say is much more effective than molotov cocktails ever were, opposition has for many become a way of life, a living commitment and the psychological war is something everyone can be a part of, indeed like it or not, everyone is a part of it.....so why not consciously take part as self aware players ourselves? It's fun.
I am, like a lot of other people, currently predicting a rise in the conflict between what could be called the forces of Austerity vis-a-vis the forces of Social Sustainability in 2013.
These conflicts will be played out in many different scenarios great and small I suspect, but there is no mistaking the signals I don't think, trouble lies just around the corner it seems.
Now that almost every part of the British establishment is viewed with deep seated cynical distrust here I am happy to have become part of the vast majority on at least some of the most important issues of the day. I am therefore expecting 2013 to bring with it an ever deepening social inclusion as parts of the country start to rise up in defiance.

Its propaganda wing, the BBC took a massive hit from the Jimmy Savile affair, this was the man who spent 11 consecutive New Year's Eves with Margaret Thatcher, yes Sir Jim.... paedophile, exploiter of disadvataged, sick, disabled and (if the gossip is to be believed) even dead children and young people who he routinely used for sexual gratification courtesy of the British establishment after he was knighted by the Queen.
So it was a pretty bad year for Auntie then.... but a good year for those of us who have gone on about the BBC report of the collapse of Building 7 more than 20 minutes before it actually happened for more than a decade now (since the controlled demolition of the World Trade Center in New York City on 11 September 2001).
2012 was a very good year for conspiracy theorists generally who are now part of the mainstream, having seen some of their hitherto unthinkable theories vindcated by the sheer scale of corruption reported in the corporate media....although some of them always were pretty mainstream and still are entry level PSYOP student projects within the so-called intelligence community's various academic endeavours.
So far as my home turf is concerned, all I can say is look out for more civil unrest in 2013.

The divide between the increasingly impoverished north vis-a-vis the more loved and nurtured (by the London elite) south of England is the stuff civil wars are historically made of.
Next year will determine whether that outcome is going to be more or less avoidable, but these civic Labour grandees have certainly got the jitters that it will all end in tears.
Although they are at least 2 years too late, the leaders of the northern English cities of Liverpool, Sheffield and Newcastle have finally found a voice as they contemplate civic armageddon in the new year.
Having already budgeted for cuts of hundreds of millions of pounds since
2011, these council leaders – all from Labour-run cities – say the latest
cuts have blown further holes in their finances, meaning that by 2018
they fear being unable to provide acceptable levels of essential
services including social care for the elderly, refuse collection, and
others such as libraries and sports facilities.

Too late!...its been 'smouldering' since 2010 at least and yes the fires of unrest do look likely to break out in all sorts of unexpected places, as the cuts pass the level at which they can any longer be tolerated by a now long-suffering population driven to draw a line in the sand.
The corporations and their Parliamentary representatives rob and plunder all our social capital without impediment and then ask us to elect them to betray us again over and over again to do the same.... it simply has to stop!

There is a scenario which says futures speculators at their computer screens in Chicago and elsewhere are driving up the global cost of food toward a critical hyperinflationary point which in 2013 could see food riots break out in America and indeed worldwide.

It's more than a possible scenario I think, however......
On the other hand the economic transition from a globalised economy toward localism and regionalism is another countervailing trend that is on the rise as we enter 2013.
Here's the rub, the move away from transnational capitalism toward localised solutions is not at all a subversive or revolutionary idea but one strongly supported by many high powered national and international institutions including the UN.

Complementary currencies lie outside the nationally defined legal realm of legal tender and are not used as such. Rate of exchange, scope of circulation and use in combination with other currencies differs greatly between complementary currency systems, as is the case with national currency systems.
My point here is that as we go into the new year the threats to our lifestyle in Britain and in other parts of the 'West' are significant and increasing, whereas other developments like co-operative enterprise, local problem solving, free food (http://www.incredible-edible-todmorden.co.uk/) and local food production and consumption added to a profusion of various forms of social enterprise will be in some places picking up the slack and making the transition a less traumatic experience.
The only counterbalance to widespread civil disturbances is this food securing conversion of abandoned green spaces into community food producing allotments and local markets across the country. This is what the transition economy sets out to achieve... affordable 'clean' organic and non-GMO contaminated food outside of the corporate monopoly and speculators reach.

The worldwide transition network is one of the most interesting developments in the past five or so years. It is not a revolutionary movement as such, but its aims are transformational and these trends to will be gaining ground in 2013 I believe.

On 10 February according to the Chinese Zodiac the year of the (black) water snake begins as Han Ban.Com tells us.... this might be just the sort of omen we need if we are going to get through 2013 with transition displacing riot and localities increasingly displacing corporations as primary decision makers.
